A 'Magyar Sakkszövetség'. I. ÉS II. VERSENYÉNEK

TORNAKÖNYVE

Budapest, 1911. Temesvár, 1912.

ABSOLUTE RARITY, ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND!!

Vécsey, Özséb: "A 'Magyar Sakkszövetség'. I. ÉS II. VERSENYÉNEK TORNAKÖNYVE. Budapest, 1911, Temesvár, 1912". A 'Magyar Sakkszövetség' és a 'Temesvárisakk kör' megbízásából a versenyek résztvevöinek svíves közremüködésevel szerkeszti.

Jászóvar, Remény nyomda, 1913. Private hardback binding with Title in spine and front cover (of original softback edition) mounted. 668 (including Title page) + 1 sheet. Title page lost (hence why this copy starts on page 3) but supplied in photocopy. 16,8 x 13 cm. In Hungarian.

Good: Some defects in the binding: some dirt on the original mounted cover, binding with some scratches on the edges, remains of old library label at the bottom of the spine and faded Title on the spine. Only 4 stamps from the old Library: in the 1st safeguard, barely visible, with the number 115 written in blue ink below the stamp, on page 3 there are 2 stamps (1 at the top and one at the bottom), and the 4th and last stamp I have seen is on the outer side of page 17 (Crosstable). Pages 15-16 loose with outer edge small tears. General browning, though without writing inside, and in fairly good condition for its age and type of paper.

L/N 5308; Di Felice 383.1 and 2183.1 (Chess Competitions 1824-1970); Maybe not in Kieler Schachkatalog.

I have only seen it once in my life for sale at Auction, at the 65 KLITTICH - PFANKUCH Auction (November 2013), lot 953, which was sold for 1.722,70 EUR!! (Hammer Price of 1.400 EUR).

KLITTICH - PFANKUCH

GOOGLE TRANSLATOR

In the tournament for the third Hungarian championship in Budapest in 1911, Zoltán Balla and Barász won. The fourth Hungarian championship in Temesvar 1912 won Gyula Breyer before Asztalos. According to a pencil note from the previous owner "One of the rarest tournament books missing from almost all collections".

It is necessary to mention that the Title refers to the 1st and 2nd Championships organized by the Hungarian Chess Federation, although they are currently recognized as the 3rd and 4th Hungarian Championships, since previously the 1st was played in Győr (1906) and the 2nd in Székesfehérvár (1907), although without the presence of the Hungarian Chess Federation. According to Wikipedia, the HCF first appeared in 1911, but failed to establish itself properly until 1923. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_Chess_Championship

Below I give a list of 4 typographical errors observed (maybe there are some more):

- The 6th Round (page 168) erroneously appears as 4th, so "there are" two 4th Rounds.

- In the 8th Round, game 35 (after 34) erroneously appears as 37 (page 218), so "there are" 2 games 37.

- Page 239 erroneously appears as 139, so "there are" 2 pages 139.

- There are 2 different games 107 (pages 523-528), that they are reflected on page 663 of the Index.

In Budapest 1911 Breyer lost the last 4 rounds by default (in fact, Breyer lost all his games, so perhaps he had health problems), as well as Reti the last, so logically the following 5 games are not present (curiously in the Crosstable on page 17 only 3 Breyer defaults are marked): 6th Round BARASZ-BREYER, 7th Round STERK-BREYER, 8th Round FLUSH-BREYER, 9th Round RETI-STERK and ASZTALOS-BREYER. So there are 41 games from Budapest 1911 in the book, although game 41 is not from the Main Tournament.

In Temesvár 1912 there was only 1 default (of Pesitz), in the 14th Round, so logically the PESITZ-DALMY game is not present. In ChessBase it appears erroneously as Draw.

In Budapest 1911 the winners were Zoltán von Balla and Zsigmond Barász (the only undefeated player in the Championship), tied for 1st-2nd places.

And at Temesvár 1912, Breyer scored a great win without losing a single game, in contrast to his last place at Budapest 1911 where he lost every game.

The games have continuous numbering, so Temesvár begins with game 42. In total in the book there are 152 games (if we take into account that there are 2 games 107), so subtracting the 41 from Budapest 1911, there are 111 from Temesvár, of which 7 are from the secondary Tournaments (6 from the "A" mellékverseny Tournament and 1 from the "B" mellékverseny). Therefore, 104 of the main Championship would remain, and this implies that it is complete, since a 15-player League System Tournament consists of 15 Rounds with 7 games each Round, giving rise to 105 games, but the aforementioned default in the PESITZ-DALMY game of the 14th Round must be subtracted.
