Philipp Stamma was a well-known Syrian chess champion of the 18th century. As early as 1737 he published a collection of endgame studies. His greatest merit is the invention of short notation, which is still used today in a slightly improved form. This edition contains an introduction to the game of chess and its rules, followed by descriptions of games in different versions.
