An interesting letter by Lubomir Kavalek dated 7 October 1968, written shortly after his emigration from Czechoslovakia caused by the military occupation of the Warsaw Pact countries led by the Soviet Union. The letter is addressed to the Czechoslovak Chess Federation, typewritten in Czech with the original signature of Lubomir Kavalek.

Vážení,

obdržel jsem váš dopis ze 17. září a rád vyhovím vašemu přání, abych osvětlil své počínání v poslední době.

V noci z dvacátého na jednadvacátého srpna byla Československá socialistická republika brutálně přepadena pěti zeměmi Varšavského paktu. Tato kruté skutečnost donutila mnoho lidí změnit své nejbližší plány. Se mnou to je nejinak.

V září jsem chtěl udělat část svých zkoušek na Fakultě osvěty a publicistiky UK, zbytek bych dodělal do konce prosince 1968. Mimo to jsem se pečlivě připravoval na lugánskou olympiádu. Považoval jsem tuto přípravu za svůj nejdůležitější úkol. Pokračoval jsem v ní, pokud to vůbec bylo v dané situaci možné, až do dnešních dnů. Snažil jsem se věřit, že k okupaci Československa došlo nějakým omylem a že režiséři této obludné hry stáhnou svá vojska z našeho území. Nestalo se tak. Ani při moskevských jednáních minulých dnů nevzniklo jasno a ostudná moskevská dohoda byla jen rozšířena o další podmínky. Proto měním své rozhodnutí ze dne 12. září, týkající se mé aktivní účasti na lugánské šachové olympiádě.

Považuji za svou morální povinnost, alespoň svou neúčastí na 18. šachové olympiádě protestovat proti násilí a bezpráví, které okupanti na nás spáchali. Současně sděluji, že jsem se rozhodl zůstat po dobu okupace mimo Československo. Nejsem si jist, zda přes nejlepší úmysly naší vlády bude možno v okupované zemi zajistit individuelní svobodu pro všechny její občany. Této svobody je k šachové činnosti nezbytně třeba. Mám z uplynulých let své zkušenosti, dokazující, že režim nesvobody by na mne zákonitě dolehl tíživěji než na jiné naše šachisty. Věřím, že moje rozhodnutí pochopíte. Nechci však ani skrývat, že mám k němu i další důvod. Znám již z dřívější doby názory některých představitelů sekce a z letmých novinových zpráv usuzuji, že sekce nezaujímá důsledné stanovisko k okupaci naší země a že její činnost neslouží zájmům našeho lidu tak, jak by bylo v současné obtížné situaci třeba.

Překvapuje mne vaše připomínka, týkající se mého studia. Stěží bych mohl počítat s nerušeným studiem do budoucnosti. Nikdo ještě přesně neví, co se s Fakultou osvěty a publicistiky UK stane.

Dears,

I have received your letter of 17 September and I am happy to comply with your wish to shed some light on my recent actions.

On the night of the 20th to the 21st of August, the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic was brutally attacked by five Warsaw Pact countries. This harsh reality forced many people to change their immediate plans. It's no different with me.

In September, I wanted to take part of my exams at the Faculty of Education and Journalism of Charles University, and I would finish the rest by the end of December 1968. In addition, I was carefully preparing for the Lugano Chess Olympiad. I considered this preparation to be my most important task. I continued it, if at all possible in the given situation, until today. I tried to believe that the occupation of Czechoslovakia happened by some mistake and that the directors of this monstrous game would withdraw their troops from our territory. It did not happen. Even during the Moscow negotiations of the past few days, there was no clarity, and the shameful Moscow agreement was only extended by additional conditions. Therefore, I change my decision of September 12, regarding my active participation in the Lugano Chess Olympiad.

I consider it my moral duty, at least by my non-participation in the 18th Chess Olympiad, to protest against the violence and injustice committed against us by the occupiers. At the same time, I announce that I have decided to stay outside of Czechoslovakia for the duration of the occupation. I am not sure whether, despite the best intentions of our government, it will be possible to ensure individual freedom for all its citizens in an occupied country. This freedom is absolutely necessary for chess activity. I have my experiences from the past years, proving that a regime of non-freedom would naturally weigh more heavily on me than on other of our chess players. I trust you will understand my decision. However, I don't even want to hide that I have another reason for him. I already know the views of some representatives of the section from earlier, and from fleeting newspaper reports I conclude that the section does not take a consistent position on the occupation of our country and that its activity does not serve the interests of our people as it should in the current difficult situation.

I am surprised by your comment regarding my studies. I could hardly count on undisturbed study for the future. No one knows exactly what will happen to the Faculty of Education and Journalism at Charles University.
