Original photo of Vlastimil Hort and Jan Smejkal during the World Student Championship in Sinaia, Romania, 1965. Size 14,3 x 10,4 cm.
They are probably drinking beer in the photo.
Vlastimil Hort (born 1944) is a Czech-German grandmaster, one of the world's strongest players in the 1960s and 1970s. He was national champion of Czechoslovakia six times (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1977) and national champion of Germany three times (1987, 1989, 1991). Hort won many international tournaments, in 1970 he represented the world team in a match against the USSR and defeated Polugaevsky. In 1976 he advanced from the Interzonal tournament to the Candidates tournament, where he unluckily lost to Boris Spassky, losing the deciding game on time in a completely won position. Hort is also a respected commentator and author of numerous articles and books.
