Forbes, Duncan. The history of chess, from the time of the early invention of the game in India, till the period of its establishment in Western and Central Europe. London, W. H. Allen, 1860. VIII, 312 pages, LX, one coloured diagram (between pages 18 and 19) and 3 plates (folded boards). LN 211. Betts 5 - 3. Original green cloth binding with gold decorated spine.

Traces the early history of the game, dealing with Chaturanga and Shatranj, their oriental variations, and the medieval game in Arabia and Europe. (Betts). The author was a professor of Oriental languages in King’s College in London.

A very rare publication.

Condition - Good: binding a bit worn and stained, handwritten numbers on inside front cover and title page, a few stamps.
