DESCRIPTION

Filip Miroslav and others. Šachový turnaj západočeských lázní 1948. Praha, Práce, 1951. In Czech. 289 pages, 1 leaf, 1 plate with group photo between pages 32-33. LN 5747. Publishers illustrated cloth with dust jacket.

Contains all 190 games from the tournament with annotations, round by round summaries, comparison of all five Carlsbad tournaments from 1907 to 1948, opening survey, tables etc. The winner was Foltys ahead of Barcza and Steiner.

The tournament was played in the Czech spa towns of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) and Mariánské Lázně (Marienbad). The aim of the organisers was to build on the famous Carlsbad tournaments played in 1907, 1911, 1923 and 1929 and the tournament in Marienbad 1925, which were attended by the then elite. However, they failed to do so mainly because of the great competition from other important international tournaments. It is worth mentioning the participation of Savielly Tartakower, who during 41 years took part in all major Carlsbad tournaments from 1907 to 1948, including the tournament in Marienbad 1925. An impressive feat!

Condition - Good or Better: dust jacket with slight tears and stains in the upper part, otherwise VG.
