Praha 1953 – 23rd Czechoslovak championship

Good: two small brown spots at the bottom, some pencil notes on the back, light/some general signs of use.

The winners of Czechoslovak championship were GM Filip and GM Pachman, with 10.5 points of 15.

The persons in the photo are, from left to right:

Fritz, Louma, Jezek, Alster, Sajtar, Fichtl, Filip (behind Fichtl, not visible), Zita, Ujtelky, Stulik, Hruskova-Belska, Vesely, Pachman, Sefc, Podgorny, Majak, Opocensky, Matys

Some biographical data:

Miroslav Filip (1928-2009), the best Czechoslovak player in 1950s, one of world's best chess players around 1960, World Championship Candidate 1956 and 1962. Multiple Czechoslovak chess champion. He played in 12 olympiads.

Ludek Pachman (1924-2003), Czech GM, in 1940s and 1950s the best Czechoslovak player together with M. Filip, 7x Czechoslovak champion, German champion. He took part on many chess olympiads. Chess writer and theoretician. He won 2 games against Bobby Fischer in 1959.

Karel Opocensky (1892-1975), strong chess master, author of several books. His best years were 1920s and 1930s: 4 times Czechoslovak champion (1927, 1929, 1938, 1944). He took part in chess olympiads 1931, 1933, 1935 and 1939. At the 1933 chess olympiad made Opocensky 12,5 points of 14 and helped considerably to the 2nd place of the Czechoslovak team.

Ladislav Alster (1927-1991), Czechoslovak champion in 1956, was a member of team which won world student championship in Oslo 1954, took part in chess olympiad Moscow 1956.

Frantisek Zita (1909-1977), Czech IM, 2x co-winner of Czech(oslovak) championship, multiple winner of Prague chess championship. Zita was strong positional player, took part on 5 chess olympiads.

Jiri Fichtl (1922-2003), Czech IM, one of the best Czechoslovak players in 1950s-60s, 2x Czechoslovak champion. In 1954-1962, he played in 5 olympiads.

Jaroslav Sajtar (1921-2003), Czech master, FIDE vice-president in 1954-1974, honorary FIDE GM.

Jiri Vesely (1932-2009), Czech master, member of Czechoslovak team, which won the first World Student championship in Oslo 1954 - Vesely scored 5,5 points of 7 games. Noted chess writer, journalist, author of several books, some of which became bestsellers. Germanist, Professor of the Charles Univeristy in Prague.

Jaroslav Jezek (1926-1998), strong Czech player, GM in correspondence chess.

Nina Hruskova-Belska (1925-2015), born in USSR, since 1943 lived in Czechoslovakia. 7x Czechoslovak women champion between 1943-1956. She participated in women Candidates‘ tournament in 1952. She was 4x arbiter in World women championship 1959-1969. She stopped active play in 1958.

Jan Sefc (1924-2014), strong Slovak master, professional chess trainer (Ftacnik, Stohl), chess writer and teacher.

Maxmilian (Max) Ujtelky (1915-1979), Slovak IM, Czechoslovak co-champion in 1960, he was by the way a direct descendant of Hungarian composer Ferenc Liszt.

Josef Louma (1898-1955), strong Czech master, FIDE vicepresident 1951-54, journalist (Ceskoslovensky sach etc), chess composer - author of some 60 endgame studies.

Jindrich Fritz (1912-1984), Grandmaster of chess composition, possibly the best Czech composer of endgame studies, author of several books).

Vlastimil Stulik (born 1921), Czech master since 1943.

Jiri Podgorny, 1912-1987, Czech master, editor of the Ceskoslovensky sach.
