POLITICAL CHESS: Or, The Closure Move. A large coloured lithographic political cartoon by Tom Merry, issued with St. Stephen’s Review, March 19th, 1887.
With a vertical centre fold, size 54 x 37cm. Small split at top of fold, small repair at lower blank edge, otherwise very good condition.
Tom Merry was the pen name of William Mecham, cartoonist and political satirist, who produced a number of cartoons for St. Stephen’s Review, a weekly magazine of political comment.
Charles Stewart Parnell (Irish Nationalist politician) and W.H.Smith (of the newsagents chain, and also a Conservative MP and First Lord of the Treasury) are depicted playing chess - the chess pieces have the heads of prominent contemporaneous politicians of the day and also that of Queen Victoria.
