Satan Playing at Chess with Man for His Soul (After) Retzsch’s Extraordinary Design. Copied by HB in his freest Manner. A lithographic print published by Thomas McLean, 29th Sep. 1837.
Size 34 x 26cm. A small repair to lower edge otherwise in very good condition. The artist is H.B., which was the pen name for John Doyle, a well known Irish political cartoonist and painter.
In place of Satan and Man in Retzsch’s original painting, Doyle has depicted Daniel O’Connell (Irish political leader and activist) and Lord Melbourne (Prime Minister), with Melbourne watched over by Britannia.
