The Briton Edmond Hoyle (1672 - 1769) was considered a games expert in the 18th century. He published several small editions on whist, quadrille, piquet, chess and backgammon. The expression "according to Hoyle", which is common in English-speaking countries, means something like "strictly according to the rules". This edition on chess includes, among other things: Franklin's Morals of Chess; Hoyle's thirty-seven Chess Lectures; Philidor's selected games; Philidor's legacy.
