Emil Palkoska
Autograph letter signed, dated 18. 9. 1938
to Josef Louma
with strong critique of the problem composer Miroslav Havel
Autograph letter signed by Emil Palkoska to Josef Louma, dated Praha, 18. 9. (19)38.
One sheet 27.5 x 21.5 cm. Written on one page, in green ink. In Czech The weight 10 grams.
Good to very good: light signs of use, light traces of horizontal centre fold.
Tense relations have existed between the well-known problem composers Emil Palkoska and Miroslav Havel for decades. They accused each other of plagiarism. They pointed out the sometimes alleged or sometimes actual plagiarism of the other's problems in their chess columns.
Their relationship grew over the years into a personal animosity.
In this letter, Emil Palkoska complains about Havel to Josef Louma, editor-in-chief of the magazine Ceskoslovensky sach. It's probably a reaction to some Havel article.
Here is a translation of the text:
Dear Mr. Louma!
Thank you for your kind message. It's really time for the Ceskoslovensky sach to be a serious official organ of the UJCS and not to be abused to satisfy vindictive party interests.
What Havel & com. are doing (Soukup in "Cas" is just a misguided wretch) equals, as one Prague problemist writes to me, the lying propaganda of German radio. Substantively, it is so pathetic that it is impossible to respond to it at all, not to mention the fact that my reply would be immediately followed by profanity. I don't get provoked! The readers will think their own thoughts!
Yours in friendly respect Dr. E. Palkoska
