La Strategie 1912.
Paris, 1912. Contemporary cloth binding with printing on spine and front cover in style of Wiener Schachzeitung magazine. Marbled edges. (4) = hafltitle, title + 512 pages + XX pages supplement Concours International d’Études + 6 plates. Size 21.5 cm. The weight 670 grams. LN 6020. Di Felice 2556. In French.
Good to very good: binding is tight with slight wear to spine ends and minor wear to corners. Small light stain on the front cover. Stamp of previous owner on the front paste-down = chess composer and collector Ilja Mikan. Pages are clean, with occasional neat notes in red pen in the problem section in Mikan's hand. One sheet (p.253-254) is a little creased.
George Marco's ownership is determined by the style of binding and his name embossed on the front cover. Chess master Georg Marco (1863-1923) was editor of the famous Wiener Schachzeitung from 1898 to 1916.
Complete volume including halftitle and title, numbers 1-12, index at the end. The covers are not bound in.
The XX-page supplement is bound at the end. Pages I-VIII were published in November, pages IX-XX in December. It is a problem tournament with 27 endgame studies, solutions and judge report.
All the 6 plates, which were published in this volume, are present:
1) La Régence en 1874 (Mars)
2) Réunion de la Normandie a la Couronne (Mai)
3) Akiba Rubinstein (Juin)
4) A. Anderssen (Juillet)
5) match Janowski – Marshall a Biarritz (Septembre)
6) Emile-Leonard Pradignat (Octobre)
All these plates are covered by tissue papers.
La Strategie was published monthly in 1867-1940.
