DESCRIPTION

"VABANQUE

DAWID JANOWSKY (1868-1927)"

By Daniel Ackerman (2005)

Ackermann, Daniel: "Vabanque: David Janowsky (1868-1927)".

Ludwigshafen, Reinhold Dreier Verlag (Schachverlag Dreier), 2005. Original yellow cloth edition with Title in front cover and spine. XV + 723 pages + 2 unnumbered pages. 24,7 x 18 cm. In German.

As new: Hardly any use is seen. Practically like new.

SPECTACULAR BOOK ABOUT THE GRAND MASTER OF ATTACK DAVID JANOWSKY!! It contains 335 excellently commented games, as well as many Crosstables (perhaps all of Janowsky's career is there) and diagrams.

Reinhold Dreier Verlag:

"A vabanque-style life that ended in abject poverty.

This book meticulously traces Janowsky's chess career from its beginnings to its bitter end with a wealth of annotated games, detailed tournament reports and many comments from Janowsky's contemporaries on his personality and his game.

The author: Daniel Ackermann, born on 7 May 1968 in Baden-Baden, lecturer in Latin at the University of Heidelberg, teacher of Latin and Ancient Greek, learned to play chess from his father at the age of five and has been interested in chess history since a young age. He was city champion of his home town several times and has a DWZ of around 2250. This book is his first work."

I have to admit that I did not know the expression Vabanque. The following Wikipedia link explains its meaning: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Va_banque. Vabanque is generally a risky choice in that the player puts everything at stake, he is "all in", and can lose everything, or gain an equal amount. So it clearly seems like an excellent adjective for Janowsky's style.
