DESCRIPTION

Lasker, Em. The Vasari Times.

First issue of a rare ship newspaper where Emanuel Lasker was the chief editor. Accompanying the issue is a xerox of a letter written by Lasker to his wife stating that he is the editor in chief and a broschure showing the staff and saloon passengers. Part of the letter reads, “On board I got into all sorts of “fights” and it came about in this manner. One day I got the idea to publish a ship paper, the “Vasari Times.” The idea was accepted favorably and we formed a staff of 6, I, as editor in chief. The newspaper was written and printed on the ship. Now various grievances came up for discussion in the paper – the wireless telegraphy had neglected supplying us with news, the poultry that had been served to us, was dry, tasteless and old. All that could be read in a humorous way in the paper. The newspaper caused a sensation, and the operator of the wireless telegr. Pinned a very personal, sarcastic answer, directed towards me, on the black bulletin board, and we, that is my staff and I, wrote a very dry, but convincing, short reply.”

Condition: Paper yellowed. With minor tears and spots. Passenger list shows a lot of wear.
