DESCRIPTION

Greco, Gioachino. Chess made easy. 1750.

or, the games of Gioachino Greco, The Calabrian. With additional games and openings, Illustrated with Remarks and General Rules. The Whole so contrived, that any person may learn to play in a few Days, without any farther Assistance. London, Knapton und Sandby, 1750. With 1 frontispiece and 1 double-sided copper plate. XXIII, 212 pages. L/N 396. van der Linde I, 366. Schmid p. 189. Kieler Chess Catalog 823.

This edition is an expanded translation of "Jeu des échecs" and contains games documented in the first book, "Gambet games" in the second book and endgames in the appendix.

Gioachino Greco (around 1600 - 1634) was the strongest chess master of the 17th century, born around 1600 in Calabria and died in the Antilles in 1634. He invented "magnificent" combinations that are still known today (Greco's sacrifice - Greco's checkmate). Greco was often able to demonstrate his art through incorrect play by his opponents. His chess book was initially only available as a manuscript; the first English translation appeared in 1656 and was subsequently printed in many languages over the centuries. "This work is undisputedly one of the most excellent and at the same time most instructive works on the game of chess. It contains around 150 extremely witty ... games without notes ... The end is formed by 6 endgames ..." (Schmid) "The cover picture is a reduced engraving after Le "Jeu des Echecs gravé par l'Epicié, d'après C. D. Moor ..." (van der Linde) The copper plate shows a diagram.

Note: This is presumably the first issue, first state as there is only the errata on pages xxiii and [xxiv].

Condition: Bookplate on inner cover. Name on endpaper. Browned and partly stained inside, few pages with small edge defects.
