Paul Morphy (1837 - 1884) was considered one of the greatest chess masters and impressed with his positional understanding combined with his combinational skills. This work is a comprehensive account of Morphy's career up to the time of his return to America in 1859. With chapters on "Chess in England since Philidor" and "The Staunton affair". Written by an Englishman who served as Morphy's secretary during his stay in Europe.
