The Russian chess master and composer Ilya Shumov (1819 - 1881) was an officer in the Russian Baltic Fleet and worked in the Navy Ministry. He was considered one of the strongest Russian chess players of his time and played several competitions against Urussov, Jänisch, Winawer and Petrov. In 1869 he was involved in founding the St. Petersburg Chess Society. Shumov created around 200 chess compositions, some with entertaining or political overtones. This edition is the first Russian book on chess problems. Text in Russian and French.
