DESCRIPTION

A FALSE MOVE. Political cartoon published by Thomas McLean, undated but 1850. A nice engraving, size 31 x 24cm. It depicts John Bull playing chess against The Pope. On the board Queen Victoria is represented by a chess piece being threatened by the bishop (Cardinal Wiseman). The Pope says “Check to your Queen, John”; John Bull replies “Pooh-pooh… your Bishop is out of his place man.”
