DESCRIPTION

"THE CHESS TOURNAMENT"

1851 LONDON

By H. STAUNTON (1852) 1st Edition

Staunton, H.: "THE CHESS TOURNAMENT." A collection of the games played at this celebrated assemblage, illustrated by copious diagrams, and notes, critical and explanatory. By H. STAUNTON, Esq. Author of "The Handbook of Chess", "Chess-Player's Companion", &c. &c. &c.

London, Henry G. Bohn, 1852. Publisher’s original red blind-embossed linen ribbon with gold-decorated front coverand spine. 7 publisher pages (including the back of the front cover) + Half Title page + pages 1-6 (including Title page) + X-LXCI + 377 pages + 7 publisher pages (including the back of the rear cover). 18,8 x 12,7 cm. In English.

Notes on pagination:

1- A curious aspect, which I have never seen mentioned, is that pages 7-8 seem to be missing, although I have confirmed that the book is complete. Probably, when going from page 6 to IX, they also added the leaf of the Half Title page.

2- I sold a copy on EBAY in 2013 (and I know some copies sold on Klittich) that had 32 publisher pages at the end. Honestly, nothing seems to be missing, nor are there any traces of a page being torn off in the copy of my current auction, so perhaps not all copies were bound in the same way, nor did they contain the same number of publisher pages. Another possibility is that this copy has been rebound with its own binding (unlikely thing), and maybe the labels on the inside of the covers indicate this, but I'm honestly not sure, since there is no trace of such action.

Very good: Slightly scratched binding, although in very good general condition. Some slight stain on the first pages (up to IX) and on the outer edges (the upper edge seems to have traces of some stain or "varnish"). Although practically the entire book inside is quite clean, since practically all the pages of the book are uncut at their upper edge. For its age, a book in very good (maybe to excellent) condition.

L/N 5179; Betts 25 - 1.

Betts: "Contains a full account of the first chess tournament, including the preliminary negotiations, followed by 70 games with brief notes. (1.Anderssen;2.Wyvill;3.Williams)".
