DESCRIPTION

Knizky o hre sachove

1879 book on a history of chess

and on the Czech version

of the Cessolis' work

Mencik, Ferdinand / Stitny ze Stitneho, Tomas: Knizky o hre sachove. Praha, Matice Ceska, 1879. Contemporary paper binding, with orig. front wrapper pasted on the front cover. XX + 57 + (3) pages. Size 17 x 11.5 cm. The weight 110 grams. Soukup 55; LN 4235; Mokry 1. In Czech.

Good: lightt edgewear, rear cover somewhat rubbed. Light/some general signs of use, no major flaws, text OK with no writings.

The book written by Ferdinand Mencik (he was not a chess player but a general historian) consists of 2 parts:

The first one (pp. I-XX) is devoted to Moralities written by Jacobus de Cessolis in view of a Czech translation of the „Solatium ludi scacchorum“. The Czech (more exactly, an archaic-Czech) version was more an imitation than a translation. The author, Tomas Stitny, has added a lot of changes comparing to the original Cessolis' manuscript, for example somewhat different moving of pieces, or has added various facts from the Czech environment.

The author of the manuscript was Tomas Stitny of Stitny (1333 - ca 1409), Czech nobleman, translator and one of the most noted Czech writters of the 14th century. The only today known copy of the original Stitny's manuscript is located in Vienna, bound together with 19 other author's essays. Ferdinand Mencik discovered this manuscript and was the first person who predicated the authorship to Stitny. The result of Mencik's search was this book.

In the second part of the book (pages 1-57) is the full text of the Stitny's manuscript (transcripted from the archaic to normal Czech), which is here published for the first time in printed version.
