DESCRIPTION

"PILLSBURY UND CHAROUSEK" 1914

Bachmann, Ludwig: "PILLSBURY UND CHAROUSEK". Ein Lebensbild zweier genialen Jungmeister des Schachspiels dargestellt an ihren besten praktischen Leistungen von Ludwig Bachmann.

Ansbach, C. Brügel & Sohn, 1914. Original cardboard edition. 2 Portraits + XII + 294 pages. In German.

Good to very good: Covers somewhat worn, especially the spine, with some small break in the upper and lower parts and slight crack in the middle of the left side of the spine, next to the back cover. Some tiny spots in covers. Small cracking with slight stains on the inside of the spine, between the pages XII-1 and 16-17. Some slight stain inside of the spine, it seems that due to the rust of staples (??), on pages 8-9 and 72-73. Some wrinkle. Inside without writings. Sincerely, a copy in very good condition for its age.

Inside of front cover, at the top there is an inscription (4. Preis Linden? Turnier 1921/22 Schachklub Breyer?), and in the outer lower corner there is a name or signature (Noë). It is possible that the tournament was the first to organize the Club Breyer (newly created) in memory of recently deceased (10 of November 1921) Gyula Breyer, great chess player. Of course, it is a speculation, since I don't have evidence, but my story seems very reasonable.

Linde - N. 3111.

While at the beginning of the book are the prefaces (Vorwort) of the first and Second Edition, reason why in many places appears as the Second Edition, it is necessary to comment that it is actually the second on Pillsbury, but the first on Charousek. Prior to this edition of 1914, Bachmann just published a book on Pillsbury in 1908 (Linde - N. 3110), but none about Charousek. So, in 1930, when they were published separately, Pillsbury book is published as the third edition (Linde - N. 3112), and of Charousek is published as the Second Edition (Linde - N. 3053).
