2 volumes. New York / London, Putnam, and New York, Steinitz Chess Syndicate, 1889 - 1895. With many diagrams. XLI, 193 pages. VIII, 64 pages. Errata leaf is attached. L/N 1059. Betts 14 - 1 and 14 - 6.

Wilhelm Steinitz regarded his new doctrines on the positional game, as his work of life. In the main part of the first volume, various openings (e.g. Ruy Lopez, Philidor Defense) are presented in table form. These are illustrated with games, notes and diagrams. Finally the games of the Steinitz-Chigorin match are analyzed. The second part contains examples of the Ponziani opening and the Giuoco Piano variation.

Condition: Part one in original cloth with gold embossed chess board on cover. Part two is the original paperback, covers are loose and worn. Dog ears. Both volumes are internally slightly worn.
