TITLE 22 of the famous A.C. WHITE "CHRISTMAS SERIES". 100 problems by William Meredith (1835-1903), mostly 2- and 3-movers, each with notes by different member of the Good Companion Chess Problem Club. Merediths photo as a frontispiece, in text almost 40 photos of chess problemists.
Includes a seven page introduction and biographical sketches by Otto Wurzburg and Alain White, along with several pictures, including those of Meredith's father, William Morris Meredith, who was Sectretary of the US Treasury from 1840-1850; Gouveneur Morris, an ancestor of the problemist and the American Minister at Paris during the French Revolution; and one of Meredith and his sisters. Meredith's pursuit of chess problems despite incapacitatingly bad health and years of suffering endeared himself to White and others in the chess world. The story of Meredith's perseverance, along with the unique format of the book (each problem is critiqued by a different contemporary problemist, often accompanied by the problemist's picture) arguably makes this one of the more interesting titles in the Christmas Series. (Note the picture of the young Comins Mansfield, who curiously is assigned to critique a three-move problem.)
The popular series ran from 1905 through 1936. Publisher of the series was chess composer and enthusiast Alain Campbell White (1880-1951). A. C. White sent most books of the series to his friends as Christmas gifts. But they were offered for sale, too. The series consists from 44 books on problem chess and one pamphlet from 1912. Most books are hard covers, bound in red cloth with gold lettering, usually written in English, sometimes in German and French and one was partially in Czech. Most books have printed Christmas wish slip by White, usually bound in after a title page. It appears that a part of edition of some books has wish slips and a part does not. Number of copies published of separate volumes is not known.
