Several pages in the book are underlined in pencil. Gebeler L. Rules of the game of chess between two, three and four players. Translated from the 2nd Germ. ed. with add. and append. articles < Essay on the history and literature of the game of chess». Elisavetgrad, type A. Goldsberg. 1875. 180 p.; 1 incl. p. [500 copies]. The translation was made by the eminent chess historian M. K. Gonyaev. The book contains information on the history of the game of chess, the basic rules, information on theory (mainly on openings), 56 sample games of Morphy, Andersen, Paulsen and others, rules for playing chess for four (with sample games) and for three, over 20 chess problems. The article "A Brief Essay on the History and Literature of the Game of Chess. (Comp. by Bastereau)" includes the games of Greco, Philidor, Labourdouille. McDonnell, Morphy, Stamma's positions. The section "Chess in Russia" written by the translator (pp. 154-180) covers the state of chess life and literature, and provides the text of 27 games by Petrov, Yanish, Shumov and other Russian chess players.
This item originates from the chess book collection of Zahari Stanchev, (April 27, 1920 - January 27, 1980) from Sofia, Bulgaria. Stanchev was Bulgaria's representative to FIDE in the 1960s, a writer of chess books, and an international arbiter.
