The original Dutch edition of this booklet, the later edition appeared as one of the three articles in 'Unforgotten Chessmen,' retells the history of a brilliant miniature endgame study in the first year of its existence: in reverse order, to arrive at its hidden source and obscure composer. The trail of the inquiry somehow echoes the planimetry of the study's solution (cf. picture on the dustcover). "Then suddenly, as he blindly gropes for an envelope, tears burst into his eyes, something he cannot understand but is nothing but the resurfacing of the future emotions of admirers who would just as well burn all of their own work and turn back on the road that leads to 1891, - to H. Otten, New York."
