Description

Sanvito, Alessandro. L’antica Storia della Società Scacchistica Milanese dal 1881 agli anni ‘60. Volume 1. Bologna, Le Due Torri, 2014. In Italian. 127 pages. Original hardcover. Sanvito 2625.

From the back cover:The Milan Chess Club (Società Scacchistica Milanese) is undoubtedly one of the clubs that made chess history in Italy: for many decades a true forge of important initiatives and events, with its men often serving in the leadership of the Italian Chess Federation. Legendary world champions such as Alekhine and Tal have passed through its premises, ranks of national champions have been formed there, and some of the most important Italian tournaments have taken place there.

Alessandro Sanvito, an internationally renowned chess historian, with this volume has fulfilled the promise made in the 1980s to two of the most renowned presidents of the Milan Chess Club, Dal Verme and Ferrantes, to compile a History of the "Scacchistica Milanese" in order to preserve its historical heritage of over 100 years. The result is a cross-section of the noble game and its customs, a compelling read that clearly reveals the great passion for chess that has animated Milanese players since its first foundation in 1881 at the Caffè del Leone and which, amidst the eventful happenings of important tournaments, changes of venue, and the succession of presidents, has accompanied them throughout their history.
