Vlastimil Hort (1944–2025) was a Czech-German grandmaster and one of the world’s strongest players in the 1960s and 1970s. He won the Czechoslovak Championship six times (1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1975, 1977) and the German Championship three times (1987, 1989, 1991). He was the winner of numerous international tournaments and in 1970 represented the World Team in a match against the USSR, defeating Lev Polugaevsky. In 1976 he qualified from the Interzonal Tournament for the Candidates, where in 1977 he narrowly lost to Boris Spassky, losing the deciding game on time in a completely won position. Hort was also a respected commentator and the author of numerous articles and books.
