Press wirephoto of Bobby Fischer playing ping-pong during a break from his training regimen ahead of the forthcoming World Championship match against Boris Spassky. The image was taken at a resort in the Catskill Mountains, New York, in March 1972. Dimensions: 25.4 x 20.2 cm.
The caption on the photo provides the following text: (NY4-March 23) A BRIEF RESPITE-Bobby Fischer, the United States' hope for the world chess championship, takes a brief break in his grueling regimen of study for the forthcoming championship match against Russia's Boris Spaasky, with a game of ping pong at a giant resort in New York's Catskill mountains. At age 29, he's poised for a crack at the world title, a goal since the beginning of his brilliant career, and he hasn't got much time for anything but study. (AP Wire-photo)
Condition - Fair: The photo is not very sharp. The white margins are somewhat soiled and show creases. The reverse side features a blue archival stamp from the Colombian newspaper "EL ESPACIO". It includes various handwritten editorial entries in Spanish, including the filing number "927", photo number "46419", and the notation "ASPECTO". There is a clear layout instruction "PAG 6" written in marker, indicating the photo was slated for publication on page 6.
