Alfons X. "der Weise". Das Buch der Spiele. Übersetzt und kommentiert von Ulrich Schädler und Ricardo Calvo. Wien und Berlin, LIT, 2009. In German. 335 pages. Original color-illustrated hardcover.
King Alfonso X of Castile (1221–1284), who is also called “the Wise” because of his numerous scholarly projects, had a book on board and dice games compiled towards the end of his life. He did not live to see the completion of this magnificent manuscript, richly decorated with many colored illustrations. For Alfonso, games were more than mere pastime: they symbolized the nature of human beings and the world in which they live. Therefore, his book of games represents one of the most important sources for the cultural history of games as such. For the first time, chess, dice games, backgammon, nine men’s morris and other games were described in a European language.
Ulrich Schädler and Ricardo Calvo have undertaken, for the first time, to present Alfonso X’s Book of Games in a complete German translation from Old Spanish, supplemented with a well-founded commentary on the history of the games discussed, making it accessible to a wide audience.
