Hugh Alexander was Britain's strongest chess player for nearly two decades. He was perhaps less steady in his play than, say, Atkins and Penrose, but were more dangerous thn either to the very best opponents as shown by his victories over Euwe, Botvinnik, bronstein, Pachman and Gligoric.
Hugh liked to be attacked. He preferred an active defence, and he was a most dangerous counter-puncher when in difficulties. He had excellent judgement of the kind of positions that could be defended., and he defended them with great resource. Thus, like Muhammed Ali, he appeared to leave himnself wide open ...
