Description

Holländer, Hans. Der Keiser ob dem scâchzable. Sonderdruck aus: Geschichte im Bistum Aachen. Band 5. 1999/2000. Neustadt, Schmidt, 2000. In German. Pages 33-48. Original softcover.

The historical-iconographic study "Der Keiser ob dem scâchzable" (The Emperor at the Chessboard) examines the connections between Charlemagne and the game of chess. The author discusses medieval legends concerning Charlemagne’s chess sets, artistic depictions of chess in the 11th–13th centuries, and the symbolic role of chess as an emblem of power and chivalric culture.

The study was published in the academic anthology Geschichte im Bistum Aachen, vol. 5 (1999/2000), which contains contributions on various historical aspects of the Diocese of Aachen.

This is a scarce academic offprint (Sonderdruck), printed in a limited number of copies. The front cover bears a handwritten dedication by the author to the renowned Italian chess historian Alessandro Sanvito (1938–2020).

Condition - Very Good: Slight soiling on the cover.
